Gilston,1st. Dragoon Guards D.C.M. 30/10/1901, Mentioned in Despatches, L.G. 23/6/1902. Regimental records record 'This NC Officer has several times performed acts of great personal gallantry and has been most valuable as NCO in charge of special scouting parties. Recommended for DCM'. Transferred to 5 DG in 1904. His service papers state he was from Bally William, Tipperary and also confirms his Austrian Silver Medal for Valour. As Colonel of the Regiment, the Emperor Franz Joseph bestowed medals to both of the DCM winners for the Boer War. One in gold to RSM Goode and one in silver to Gilton. Unique group to the British Army
