Military General Service,  clasp, Egypt, to W. McCreary,  Ancient Irish Fencibles

1 of only 2 awards the other being to Ensign George T Burke the existence of which is unrecorded.

With copy discharge papers. Walter McCreary, b. Donegal, enl. in the Ancient Irish Fencibles 1799, disch. to Chelsea Pension 1802, aged 20 in consequence of being invalided home  as a result of impairment to his eyesight sustained in Egypt.

The Fencible regiments were disbanded in 1799 other than those who were enlisted for service in Europe. The Ancient  Irish were ordered to Minorca in 1801. When more troops were required in Egypt they were sent there despite their terms of service.

An exceptionally rare and probably unique Fencible medal
