Previously served 18th 'Pals' Durham Light Infantry (wounded First Day of Somme).

A schoolteacher from Sunderland. Attested October, 1914. To Egypt, 12/1915, France, 3/1916, wounded First Day of Somme, to 2nd. Gen. Hosp. 6/7/16. Attd. 1/6 W. Yorks.  M.M. L.G. 28/1/1918.

On 1/7/1916 the 18th D.L.I. attacked the village of Serre suffering some 300 casualties.

Charlton's casualty sheet records wound as 1-4/7/1916, though battalion casualties were sustained on 1/7.
