B. Sunderland, c. 1894, enl. Sunderland, of 26 Norman St. Sunderland, 1911 Census one of 7 sons & daughters and occup. Engineers Labourer.
On the 3/5/1917, the battalion moved up in support of attacks on the enemy trenches at Infantry Hill & Tool Trench at Monchy-le-Preux. The attack came to a standstill due to intense machine gun fire from Infantry Hill and casualties numbered 242 officers & men, killed, wounded and missing.
Pte. Curtis has no known grave and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial and on a plaque for the Sunderland Gas Company situated at the Transco site.
