Registar of Mines William Bensted Smith. Served in the Imperial Commisariat Department during the Wars of 1846-7 and 1850-2-3; during the latter war he was in charge of the transport; from 1860-70 was secretary to the Kowie harbour improvement board; was appointed sub-inspector of claims at the diamond fields, November 1871, and registrar of mines for Kimberley and De Beer Mines, 1 June, 1874, and of Du Toit’s Pan and Bloemfontein mines, 15 December, 1884; was appointed government nominee member of the Kimberley mining board, and was chairman of the Board from January 1877 to December 1880, and was Justice of the Peace. Notice of death in the Diamond Fields Advertiser 5 August 1889.
