Regarding the series of the Mounted Infantry Company (publication unknown)
“D” Company’s khaki trews had lost not only the seats but most of the legs! At an inspection by General Hutton, just appointed to command all mounted infantry, De Lisle explained the case saying he had almost left the company behind but was very glad he had not as it had particularly distinguished itself. After complimenting the men on the way the Commander had spoken of them, General Hutton said he could believe they were “a tough lot, riding in the bare buff as they were doing”, and added they had good reason to be proud of themselves. But praise did not produce breeches, which were not received until June! Reid says that the highly irregular appearance of the company more than once caused it to be fired by its own side. (1)
(1). Late Captain J. Reid, Gordon Highlanders and K.A.R. (as published)
The ‘Life of a Regiment ‘ records ‘Captain J. Reid, D.S.O. D.C.M. (sic) served in Tirah, was q.m. 6th M.I. at the end of the South African War, Serge Instructor Shetland Volunteer Companies 1907-14. Commissioned in the KAR gained D.S.O (sic)in East African campaign, to the effects of his death, 1935, was due.’
There is no suggestion Reid was awarded a DSO. Quite likely reminded for such but receiving a MID.
During their services on the N.W. Frontier the regiment was distinguished at the storming of the Malakand pass and during the Tirah Campaign was distinguished at the storming of the Dargai Heights where Piper Findlater and Pte.Lawson were awarded the V.C.

D.C.M. (VR) Q.S.A. Relief of Mafeking, Elandslaagte, Defence of Ladysmith. Sq. Sergeant Major 5th Drag. Gds & Regimental Sergeant Major. Imperial L.H. Exceptional posthumous award for Hartbeestfontein 22/3/1901, where the recipient was killed in action , a rearguard action later described by the Boer leader Smuts as ‘the most brilliant one I had seen fought by either side during the entire campaign. Both General de la Rey and myself were determined to capture the pom-pom, as well as the ILH” . Additionally commended for Cyferfontein where the ILH came under close range, withering fire from a far numerically superior Boer force, and with mounting casualties with his charger shot in several places and his uniform and saddlery shot though in many places galloped up and down the whole line of ILH, hat in hand, waving the men away, shouting the order: “Retire! Retire!”
