He was mentioned in despatches and received the thanks of the Governor-General in Council.In 1854 attacked the Riff pirates on shore near Cape Tres Forcas and recaptured the English brig Cuthbert Young. as Flag Captain in the Leander, at Sebastopol operations and at the evacuation of the Crimea and A.D.C. to Queen Victoria
