Alexander Gray was born in Elgin, a blacksmith by trade, for the Seaforth Highlanders on 2 January 1895, aged 18, serving with the 1st Battalion in Egypt and the Sudan from 5 January 1898 to 26 October 1902. He took part in the Nile Expedition of 1898, and was wounded at the Battle of the Atbara on 8 April 1898.
