S.W. Beadle
Sydney Wilford Beadle, born Ahmenabad, Bombay, 1886, son of a cotton merchant. Naval Cadet 1900, HMS Implacable 1902 under Captain Prince Louis of Battenburg, A/Sub-Lt 1905, Sub-Lt 1906, Lieut. 1907, whilst serving on the Cruiser Cumberland, applied for h.p.leave 1912 to deal with urgent family matters in Canada. Rejoined the Navy 19 August, 1914, in his old rank of Lieutenant, promoted to rank of A/Commander on 22 August and appointed to commanded of the Hawke Battalion and proceeded to Belgium for the defence of Antwerp. in early October, having belatedly received the order to withdraw, he was one of approximately 1,600 men of the Benbow, Collingwood and Hawke Battalions of the 1st Brigade who were forced to take refuge in neutral Holland in order to prevent unnecessary casualties or capture by the enemy. he transferred to the emergency list March, 1919 and become a stock broker in London, died 1937.
