‘For great gallantry on the 27th April, 1915, near Ypres, when he left the advanced trench under a very heavy shell and rifle fire to assist in bringing up ammunition to the firing line, nine out of ten of the party carrying the ammunition being wounded.’
Russian Cross of the Order of St George L.G. 25/8/1915: ‘For gallantry and distinguished service in the field.’
A contemporary news cutting stated: ‘Pte. John Paul is a native of Glasgow, and joined the 4th Battalion H.L.I., in which he had previously served, soon after war was declared, at the age of 34. He went out with a draft to the 1st Battalion in December. On the 19th of June he was awarded the Medal for Distinguished Conduct in the Field.’
