Six 11-clasp medals to the 43rd, this being an unique combination.
James Oddy, a native of North Yorkshire, entered the ranks of the 43rd Foot direct from the Militia in January 1808 and embarked for Portugal with the 2nd Battalion that September. and wounded at Vimiera, after which he ‘joined the 1st Battalion detachments’.

‘Served with the regiment at the following sieges, storms and actions….the battle of Vimiera, where he was wounded and joined the 1st Battalion detachment at the battle of Oporto, and the passage of the Douro, also the battles of the Coa, Busaco, Fuentes D’Onor, Sabugal, and the sieges and storms of Cuidad Rodrigo and Badajoz, the battles of Salamanca, Vittoria, Nivelle, Nive, Orthes, Toulouse, served at New Orleans America and the capitulation of Paris.’
Died at Birstall on 17 August 1850, aged 60 years, and was buried in St. Peter’s Church.
