B. Carlisle 1839, son of an Irish labourer, enl. 1856 , 85th soon transf. to the 85th.
Corpl. 1858 , Sergeant 1860, Col. Sergeant 1863, Pay.. Mr. Sergeant 1868, commd. 1872, having seen service with the 6th. in the Indian Mutiny and against the hill tribes in 1868 to h.p. Captain 1/12th 1880.
The London Gazette of 25th October, 1898 records Honorary Lieutenant-Colonel G. Shields, Army Pay Department retired. Dated 12th October, 1898. (presumably same man)
A fine career
Second War ‘1945’ D.F.C. and Second Award Bar, ‘1943’ D.F.M. group to R.A.F. who flew in at least 79 operational sorties, with 106, 83 and 7 Squadrons - of which 68 were with the Path Finder Force, all as a Lancaster Visual Bomb Aimer of a Marker Crew
