Afghanistan 1878
Lieut. G. Shields, 1/12th Regt.
B. Carlisle 1839, son of an Irish labourer, enl. 1856 , 85th soon transf. to the 85th.
Corpl. 1858 , Sergeant 1860, Col. Sergeant 1863, Pay.. Mr. Sergeant 1868, commd. 1872, having seen service with the 6th. in the Indian Mutiny and against the hill tribes in 1868 to h.p. Captain 1/12th 1880.
The London Gazette of 25th October, 1898 records Honorary Lieutenant-Colonel G. Shields, Army Pay Department retired. Dated 12th October, 1898. (presumably same man)
A fine career
Fine 1940 DFM 40 Squadron (Blenheims) shot down and wounded, made ashore by dinghy where taken prisoner of war. Following six months in hospital was held in a series of camps until 1945 with photographic images of the recipient, and an original letter written whilst PoW
