Laertes, the most serious of four shell strikes that day
immediate and superb D.F.M. and Logbook group awarded in June 1940, though wounded, displayed great courage in an epic return journey from the Ruhr in a badly shot up Whitley which had to be ditched in the sea. once more involved in a post-sortie ditching that September, and even though the most strenuous efforts were made by air sea rescue services over three days in stormy conditions, he was among those lost on the third day.
